Discount Tire Promotional Photo Shoot.

Was asked to stop for their discount to help rally in a few people and had some fun! Left work early, stuck around for a couple of hours and had a chance to have a blast and get some photos. Really fun out there!

I don’t know if it garnered any extra attention to the store but it definitely attracted a few kids and adults alike to check her out and walk into the store.

My fiancee always teases me because I talk to EVERYONE and wind up getting opportunities, such as this, that I CLEARLY do not deserve.

Not too bad, she got to party by the tent.

I think this is one of my favorite, if not THE favorite, photo.

New Wheels Installed . . .

After a bit of trial, that is.

So, as we are up to speed (pun intended) it’s known that I recently purchased some wheels and tyres for the MSM (Mazdaspeed Miata). I take them over to Discount Tire to get mounted and balanced and they looks ready to go and I’m excited to get them rolling.

I pull off the old wheels, place the new wheels on, after installing the locking lug nut, I go to put the rest of them on. BAM! The factory lug nuts are too short and too wide to go on properly. LOL! I should have known it wasn’t going to be that easy!

You have to love that Free One-Day (sometimes same-day) shipping on items. I order some new lug nuts, longer and narrower of course, and get them in the following day.

LET THE FUN BEGIN!

So I get the wheels unloaded and setup to install.

I pull the first wheel off and weigh it . . . It’s roughly 1KG per inch of diameter. Not the heaviest but definitely not the lightest.

17 and a half kg. That's not TOO bad . . .but stepping down will definitely help.

Just for good measure, I weigh the next wheel as well. It’s not MUCH lighter, but a 2KG difference is supposedly pretty big when considering it’s unsprung and rotational. The new lug nuts we purchased are also CONSIDERABLY lighter than the factory ones. By a very tangible amount. So that helps too!

Right around 15.5kg . . .good bit of difference supposedly. I'm not convinced yet, but people swear by it.

Of course, it was at this point that I absolutely HAD to run into another road block! 😦

Yep, I couldn’t use the 4-way as the socket-portion was too wide to clear the spokes of the wheel. So I went out and picked up a 21mm 1/2″ socket for my torque wrench (which you ALWAYS use to tighten your wheels on, right?!?!) :p

I get home, get everything sorted (after misplacing my wheel key several times, HAHAHA) and finally get all four properly placed (directional tyres ) and installed.

These bad boys ride as good as they look! I'm super satisfied with this purchase. Good upgrade!

Only did a VERY small amount of driving to shuffle the cars back around back into the garage properly. I can already tell the car is going to ride, handle and GO a lot better than it did before. Just from the little bit of movement. I’m hoping that it prove to be true. I’m very satisfied with the look, now I just have to lower the damn car! HAHAHA! The $$$$ never ends, right?

VLOG3 and a Shake Down Run! AAAWWW YEAH!

I don’t really have a schedule for updating the blog, but I’ll try to do at least one a week. Please forgive any delays in posting, the racing season is picking up and so is work as an IT Consultant so I’m strung between two lines, LOL!  But enough about that!

The fun stuff. Got the car back up and running and she looks SOOOOOO awesome! Can’t wait to get to her first drift event. I’ve had a lot go on so I’m just gonna let the pictures and videos do the talking. We’ve gotten a lot done, new aero, cage welded down and reinforced, engine put back together and a shake down run! WHAT?! Yeah . . .I said it!

So let’s see these pics!

 

We saw the cage when it was mocked up, now it’s finalized. Next up is to put an SCCA Brace in it, that will happen before our first event.

This is during the shake down run. The valve cover gasket wasn’t fitted properly (it was too large) so we had to modify it and seal it with gasket maker. Worked WONDERS! Photo Credit to Brandon Andrews.

This is how she currently sits. I love it! The wing and tow hook may not be for everyone, but I enjoy it. And it will be SO MUCH FUN at the track!

Here’s a cool shot from the mountain run! We see most of the “team” lined up. I put “team” in quotes because we’re anything but, we’re just a group of guys who likes to have fun! Respect for ourselves and respect for one another, that’s the code we live by! That’s the code we drive by!

 

 

 

 

I also had the change to get a VLOG up. So here’s VLOG 3, explaining the final steps on getting the car running and the body modifications setup. As always, the video will explain everything!

I also got some video from my solo Shake Down run this past Sunday. The video below will show you the fun (and mistakes) that were had. It took some getting used to and the chassis is now more rigid that the suspension wants to deal with. So that’s a thing I’ll have to look into with my suspension setup. It’ll get all dialed in, piece by piece. I’m not gonna rush it.

It’s been a LONG WHILE! Updates, Touge Runs, MORE!

Sooooo . . .yush . . .it’s been a while

A long while 😦

I’m very VERY sorry that I’ve been away so long, there’s been a lot of crap going on in my life that has kinda taken me away from the game. But, I’ll try to be more diligent and post more things up here so that people can get a sense for what’s going on with Derpy once again.

Well, the shot version is, I moved to NY for a bit, decided that wasn’t going to work, so now I’m back in Georgia, LOL! Sweet Georgia! Much better here than NY, for a multitude of reasons. But I’m considerably happier now.

So let’s just jump to the present. A group of buddies and I do these Monthly Mountain Runs that are really fun. We’ve closed the group now but we will start to open it up once the kinks and bugs are worked out of the system. I’ll post some pictures from that below.

Derpy had some issues with oil and boost, all have been resolved and she’s running better than ever now. Lots of responsive power and tons of peppy tail-happy handling that we love so much about her. She’s a good girl and I plan on keeping her that way.

Ummm, trying to think of anything else IMPORTANT! Umm, not really much going on. The mountain runs have been a blast, getting her fixed and going on a few shakedown runs has been awesome. But that’s really it!

OH! I plan on driving her up to New Jersey for a show. So stay tuned for THAT! It’ll be amazing!

Renewed My SCCA/NASA Memberships! Aiming For Time Trials!

Those who have known me for a while know that I held SCCA and NASA memberships about 4 years ago but dropped them to focus on drifting exclusively. Well I recently got the itch to do some group racing and time trials (more specifically hill climbs) so I recently reupped them both in hopes to get the best chance of participation as I get closer to preparedness. It’s an expensive journey but one that I’m willing to FACE this time, instead of just talking about it like so many do and never realize.

Derpy’s Water Trip! Long Island Sound!

Derpy and I head to the water, she loves everything about the water and had so much fun and, of course, got a TON of attention, questions and even a few burn out requests!  Gotta love that!

Driver Identification: Check! Team Identification: CHECK! Plus Thunderlane!

I recently enlisted the help of a buddy of mine, Brent with Design It Wraps & Graphics, with getting some door ID’s and team ID’s setup for my car, he accepted and the following is the result! I’m SUPER STOKED with how all of this came out! To top it all off, my VW, Thunderlane, decided to get his cutie mark as well!

As you can see, someone has made a pretty BANG ON clone of my car in Forza. The best part is, I don’t even KNOW the guy! I wish I did, I’d tell him “Thank You SO MUCH!” and give him a big ol Virtual High-Five . . .probably a hug! I know Derpy would hug him with all four hooves and her wings! This is absolutely awesome and I’m sincerely flattered by this gesture and homage to Derpy Hooves [Drifting is Magic].  I’m sincerely impressed! This is EPIC! Thank you, whoever you are!

Derpy LIVES!

Well, she was never really dead, but she’s running better than ever!

 

For those who have been following the blog regularly, you know that Derpy was a bit sick over the previous months. I don’t know if it was all of the stress of the move or the cold weather but she developed a case of Bad Injectors.

 

So I opened the garage and pulled Derpy up on this rainy day:

They’re not only shinier but they put new life into Derpy . . .almost TOO MUCH life. We’ll get to that in a second.

 

Next up, a recently made friend of mine decided to help me out by selling me his OVCP (Over Valve Cover Pipe) hard pipe. Replacing those yucky (and as I found out, leaky) soft pipes with one solid piece throughout.

 

It also looks and flows MUCH better than the stock unit. Check it out!

Close up of the old setup where it went to the BOV. You can see exactly where the leaks occurred. But, live and learn, right?

 

Now all that is left to do is find a location for the blow off valve OR have a bung (LOL! Bung) welded onto the OVCP for the BOV itself. That may prove easier, we’ll see.

 

Now, previously I mentioned that Derpy has new life and it’s almost TOO MUCH life. Well, the reason for that is, now that she has the new injectors and boost leaks fixed, she’s creating too much power for the stock clutch. It slips in the mid ranges. But no worries, a new clutch has been ordered, it’s an XTD Stage 3, 6-Puck Clutch.

At first I was hesitant to buy such an aggressive setup, but I figured that since Derpy is NOT a daily driver, it shouldn’t be so bad. It’ll only suck when trying to get her on the trailer, LOL!

 

I’ve also got on order, as I know they’re necessary, a set of coilovers. These aren’t a very well known brand, but they’re manufactured in the same building as K-Sports and D2s, at a much lower price, so I trust them.  I’ve also read reviews from people who have them and none of them have complained. I can’t wait to get them installed and get some serious drifting and racing happening this year.
